Better Public Services

The Government is committed to providing high quality public services that are focused on the things that matter most to New Zealanders.

To support this, the Government has established the Better Public Services Advisory Group. The Advisory Group is responsible for prioritising, driving and coordinating public sector reform. View the media release about the Advisory Group.

What's new

The Advisory Group is working alongside, and coordinating with, public sector leaders already implementing or designing their own reform initiatives which contribute to Better Public Services. You can find out more about the work under way in our Other Initiatives section.

Transforming NZ's court processes through new approaches to recording and transcribing evidence, and an online innovation forum within the NZ Defence Force: two more examples of innovative thinking from the New Zealand public sector. To support the Better Public Services Advisory Group, the Secretariat has prepared a number of issues papers and case studies demonstrating innovative thinking from New Zealand’s public sector. Further papers have been published in anticipation of, and in response to, requests from the public. On 11th August 2011, the Government announced decisions on changes which will reduce the number of crown entities, thereby improving coordination and reducing duplication across the public sector.

On 31 May 2011 the Government announced:

  • the formation of the Better Public Services Advisory Group. Read the media release announcing the establishment of the Group.
  • that it has instructed officials to investigate the rationalisation and consolidation of a number of Crown entities, as a next step in making government agencies more streamlined, productive and efficient. Read the Crown entities media release.
