Register of Assigned Legislation

Part 1: Ministers of the Crown

Part 2: Departments of State

Register of Assigned Legislation

The Register of Assigned Legislation is a list of the Acts where the Prime Minister has formally assigned to a Minister or department the responsibility for the Act’s administration. It is not a complete list of the Acts administered within each portfolio or by each department. A complete list of the legislation of ongoing effect that is administered within each portfolio is provided in the Cabinet Office Directory of Ministerial Portfolios.

Consulting on proposed definitions and assignments in legislation

The Cabinet Manual (paragraph 7.33) provides that the Cabinet Office should be consulted if proposed legislation contains a definition of “Minister” or “department”, or requires that the responsibility for the administration of legislation be assigned to a portfolio or department by the Prime Minister.

Arranging for assignments to be made

The Prime Minister makes assignments following advice from the Cabinet Office prepared in consultation with relevant departments and Ministers’ offices. Government departments seeking assignments should contact the Cabinet Office.

Related publications

The Cabinet Office is also responsible for preparing three related documents, which are published separately:

  • The Ministerial List contains information on the current Ministers of the Crown and the portfolios and other responsibilities that they hold.
  • The Directory of Ministerial Portfolios provides information on ministerial portfolios and responsibilities in New Zealand (excluding Deputy and Associate Minister positions). Its purpose is to provide a record of the departments and other agencies, votes and legislation associated with each ministerial position.
  • The Schedule of Responsibilities Delegated to Associate Ministers sets out defined responsibilities formally delegated to Associate Ministers. The Schedule is presented to the House of Representatives from time to time.

Updates of Register

This Register is updated from time to time to reflect authorisations for new Acts and changes to authorisations.

Consultation by government departments and agencies on proposed definitions, assignments or changes to the content of the Register should be directed to the Cabinet Office, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Executive Wing, Parliament Buildings, Wellington, Telephone: (04) 817 9743.
