| Key Task | Major assessments will be prepared according to a forward work programme agreed with the National Assessments Committee (NAC) on a quarterly basis and modified to reflect external activity and the nature of developments overseas. | |
| Achievement | The NAC approved 103 assessments. There was a particular focus on economic and political developments affecting the Asia Pacific region especially in the lead up to the APEC meeting in Auckland. Only one paper was not approved by the committee: it was overtaken by events before it could be revised. |
| Key Task | Current assessments and reports prepared for the Prime Minister, other senior ministers and officials in response to events and issues arising overseas, after tasking or the receipt of new information. | |
| Achievement | 247 other papers were prepared by the Bureau in response to external
events or tasking by the Prime Minister and Ministers. Included were:
|
| Key Task | Biographical reports prepared for the Prime Minister and other ministers for visits to or from New Zealand. | |
| Achievement | The Bureau issued 785 biographical reports, including 99 for the APEC meetings in Auckland in September 1999. |
| Key Task | Provide assessments for watch groups monitoring the deployment of New Zealand's forces overseas. | |
| Achievement | EAB reports were specifically prepared for almost all meetings of the watch groups monitoring developments in East Timor, Fiji and Solomon Islands. (see above). |
| Key Task | Maintain databases which enable the Bureau to respond appropriately to both anticipated and unexpected reporting requirements. | |
| Achievement | A new electronic database was installed in the Bureau at the beginning of the year. Currently about 65 percent of incoming classified information available to the Bureau is accessed electronically. The database also contains unclassified information the Bureau wishes to retain. |
