Strategic Objectives 1999-2001

To realise its mission, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has adopted the following strategies grouped under four cornerstones: products, people, partnerships and processes.

Quality Policy Development and Advice

    • Provide and promote excellence in policy co-ordination and development.

  • Lead and facilitate the development of the Government's strategic policy priorities.
Quality Services
  • Maintain high quality information, secretariat, and support services to the Prime Minister, Cabinet and the Governor-General.

OUR PEOPLE
    • Recruit, appoint and induct excellent people.

  • Maintain the competency and quality of existing staff, competitive rewards mix and good human resource policies.

Critical Issues In 1999/2000

Policy Development Process

  • Providing free, frank and independent advice and support to the Prime Minister to enable her to lead and manage the day to day business of Government.

Strategic Policy Priorities

  • Providing support and resources for the review formulation and implementation of the Government's strategic policy priorities.

  • Providing advice and support to the Prime Minister, in consultation with officials supporting the Cabinet Strategy Committee on those issues identified by the Prime Minister as high risk and high priority.

Youth-at-Risk

  • Contributing to the achievement of the Government's strategic priority around the prevention of youth offending and re-offending through the work of the Department's Crime Prevention Unit.

Departmental Capability

  • Enhancing the skills, systems and processes of the department to support its responsibilities and to achieve priorities agreed with the Prime Minister.

General Election

  • Providing support to the Prime Minister for her governmental obligations up to the election.
  • Providing advice and support to the caretaker government if required, and to the elected government in the post election period.

APEC 99

  • Co-ordinating interdepartmental processes for planning and security, and providing support for the Prime Minister as chair and host, for the APEC 99 series of meetings.

Millennium

  • To provide support to the Prime Minister and the Governor-General around key Millennium year events.
  • Implementing a departmental wide contingency plan to overcome Year 2000 computer technology issues.

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet contributes to the following Government outcomes through the work of its constituent units.

  • The Prime Minister as Head of Government and Chair of the Cabinet is enabled to lead and guide a coherent and informed policy-making process across the range of government activity. (Policy Advisory Group and Cabinet Office)

  • A co-ordinated and co-operative approach to crime prevention policy design and programme implementation is promoted. (Crime Prevention Unit)
  • The constitutional, social, and ceremonial functions of the office of Governor-General are performed. (Cabinet Office and Government House)

  • The functions and dignity of the office of Governor-General are supported and preserved. (Cabinet Office and Government House)

  • The Governor-General's residences are maintained through the development and implementation of long term maintenance programmes.
